LAGOS LAND RECLAMATION REFORMS YIELD POSITIVE RESULTS

Land reclamation reforms of the Lagos State Government has started yielding positive results with the recovery ofseveral Islands and lands as part of efforts to boost land availability for Tourism, Housing and investment opportunities.
The Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Engr. Adebowale Akinsanya, who disclosed this at the 2017 Annual Ministerial Press Briefing of the Ministry held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press centre, Alausa,Ikeja in commemoration of the second year Anniversary of Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, said that the Eko Atlantic City was one of the ongoing projects developed from freshly reclaimed land next to Victoria Island.
According to Commissioner, the city on the Atlantic will harbour about 250,000 people who will live in the seven districts of the 21st century City, with 150,000 commuting to work there each day, adding that the developers have a detached management and safety plan to steer the city’s evolution and boost investor confidence.
Akinsanya informed that the developers working hand in hand with special advising team and investors will ensure that highest standard is met on the newly developed city, stressing that investing in homes, businesses and tourism will flourish in the new, clean and sustainable environment.
In his words, “The Eko Atlantic City is already helping to reverse the environmental damage caused by a century of coastal erosion at Victoria Island. The imposing new Sea Wall will be a shield for the city of Lagos as well as the Eko Atlantic City, thereby converting an impending disaster into a valuable asset for generations yet unborn.”
He highlighted the benefits of the new City, being a new gateway into Africa, to include the following: an environmentally conscious development; built with nature to restore an original shoreline; able to protect Victoria Island and Lagos from ocean surge; compliant with international standards for city development; flexible in pilot size selection and clustering and easy to travel around via the excellent urban planning concept, among others.
The Commissioner revealed that other projects on reclaimed Islands/Lands include the Orange, Diamond andGracefield projects by Phoenix among others.
He noted that the Orange Island Project was to create an island of approximately 150 Hectares inside the Lagos Lagoon at the northern end of freedom way and north offshore of Elegushi land, adding that the original Island, as proposed in the Lekki Infrastructure Master Plan, will cover 312 hectares while the project has already reclaimed 150 hectares.
Another, he said, was the Gracefield Phoenix Island which is the second Island created under the proposed Lekki Infrastructure Master Plan inside the Lagos Lagoon between Lagos State Government and Gravitas Investments Limited.
